Celebrating the Unsung Heroes: Military Children

As we celebrate the Month of the Military Child, it's important to recognize the incredible sacrifices made by the children of our service members. While military service is often associated with the brave men and women who wear the uniform, it's equally important to acknowledge the families who stand behind them, especially the children who endure unique challenges and experiences.

Military children are often described as resilient, but to me, that term is an understatement. In truth, I do not prefer that word at all because it lacks the true depth and meaning of their sacrifice. Society sometimes uses the word "resilient" as if it's a simple bounce-back mechanism, but in reality, resilience is so much more. It's intentional, it's communal, it's advocacy, and support—it's a way of life for military families.

The saying, “it takes a village to raise a child” describes the essence of what it is to be a military family. The strength of caregivers and the support of community and friends are essential in creating an environment where our children can thrive despite the challenges of military life.

On a personal note, I've witnessed this resilience within my own family through countless relocations and transitions. My oldest son attended three elementary schools in just five years—a testament to the transient nature of military life for children. However, with the support of friends and resources, we successfully navigated each move, finding a semblance of normalcy amidst the chaos.

Reflecting on these experiences, I recall moments where other military spouses became my lifeline. From leaving my oldest son with newfound friends on the playground while I took an Italian driver's exam with my youngest in tow, to the heartwarming gesture of a stranger holding my crying baby during the test—these instances underscore the strength of our military community. It is not lost on me that these women, fellow spouses, were often my emergency contacts in my new community. Community is at the heart of resiliency!

These are a few examples of the countless unsung heroes within our military community who pay it forward while navigating their own challenges with grace and strength every day. Over the past 21 years, my family has lived in 13 different locations, each presenting its own set of adventures, challenges, and sacrifices. While we may not have the luxury of living near extended family, our military community has become our support system and our home away from home. This is still true today.

While our family, like many others, embraces a life of service, we recognize the importance of roots and stability, especially as our children grow older. They yearn for the same sense of community and connection enjoyed by other friends, family, or civilian counterparts. The ability to understand the unique challenges that military children endure allows us to better support them and ensure their well-being.

As we celebrate the Month of the Military Child, let us not only honor the resilience of our military children but also recognize the importance of access to community, resources, and support. Together, we play a pivotal role in fostering a thriving military community where every child has the opportunity to flourish.

To all the military children and families, thank you for your unwavering sacrifice, strength, and yes, resilience. You are the unsung heroes of our military community, and your contributions do not go unnoticed. Here's to the families that serve—you are an inspiration to us all.
