Embracing Access and What It Means for Our Community

In our work, we center our focus on access for our community each day—examining who has it, who doesn't, and exploring how those dedicated to supporting our military and Veteran communities can collaborate to ensure its equitable provision. We believe the concept of access stands as a powerful and transformative force. It is not merely about entry or admission; rather, it symbolizes a gateway to empowerment, opportunity, and a brighter future.

Access to Charitable Capacity:

At the heart of this narrative is access to charitable capacity. Our commitment to enhancing charitable capacity for NGOs and initiatives directly impacting Veterans and military families is driven by the recognition that access to financial charitable resources enables these entities to execute vital programs, offer essential services, and address specific challenges faced by our community at home. Whether it's supporting mental health initiatives, educational programs, or transitional services, access to funding is the lifeblood that propels charitable efforts forward at the local level.

The typical nonprofit is community based, serving local needs. Astoundingly, 92% of all nonprofits, including these local organizations, receive less than a quarter of all charitable funds exchanged annually. Delving deeper into public statistics reveals that more than half (55%) of nonprofits serving our community operate with reported budgets under $50k annually. This stark reality underscores an acute lack of access to charitable capacity that just 8% of national nonprofit organizations share and hold.

This is where our small but impactful team at Veterans Collaborative steps in, offering two vital services: 1) Providing the shelter of our c3 umbrella for charitable Fiscal Projects aligned with our mission to serve the military and Veteran community, and 2) Facilitating equitable grantmaking through our Funds to vetted NGOs lacking critical access at the local level. We stand as the bridge between compassionate donors, our Partners, and proactive doers. Our strategy extends beyond a one-and-done approach, fostering intentional and enduring support for the transformative initiatives that define our community.

It's crucial to highlight that during our team’s discovery calls with NGOs, a significant majority of organizations express a need for fundraising support. Understanding this prevalent requirement allows us to tailor our approach and support to effectively address the unique fundraising challenges faced by these organizations within the Veteran and military community. We offer complimentary fundraising advice to NGOs in our VETcheck program.

Why it matters? Every aspect of access hinges on the foundation of charitable capacity—funding, and, with hope, unrestricted funding (something we will talk about later). In straightforward terms, having funds allows organizations to do more, give more, reach more, and serve more—creating access to resources, opportunities, community, and advocacy for our military and Veteran community. Here’s what we mean.

Access to Resources:

Critical to every Veteran, service, and family member is access to vital resources that pave the way for seamless transitions through the military life-cycle, from military service to civilian life. Veterans, service members, and their families benefit immensely when provided with the tools, information, and support necessary to navigate the complexities of post-service challenges. Whether it be employment opportunities, educational programs, or mental health services, access to these resources becomes a lifeline for those who have dedicated their lives to serving our nation.

Access to Opportunities:

Beyond resources, access unlocks a world of opportunities. It is the key that opens doors to fulfilling careers, educational pursuits, and community engagement. For veterans transitioning to civilian life, having access to mentorship, training programs, and employment networks can be the catalyst for a successful and meaningful second chapter. Opportunities not only contribute to personal growth but also strengthen the fabric of our society by leveraging the unique skills and experiences of our military community.

Access to Community:

The sense of belonging and camaraderie within a supportive community is invaluable. Access to networks and collaborative platforms ensures that veterans and their families remain connected, understood, and uplifted. It fosters a shared journey where experiences are exchanged, challenges are met collectively, and triumphs are celebrated together. This access to community becomes a pillar of strength, providing the foundation for resilience and a support system that extends beyond military service.

Access to Advocacy:

Advocacy plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the needs and concerns of our military community are heard and addressed. Access to platforms where voices can be amplified, concerns can be advocated for, and change can be initiated is essential. Through advocacy, Veterans can actively participate in shaping policies, influencing public perception, and championing causes that directly impact their lives.

Something to Consider:

Today, I am asking you to consider a few key points:

1) Reflect on your community—think about the prominent organizations you support and then consider their impact at the local level, right in your backyard. I'm not suggesting that you shouldn't support national organizations, but I am encouraging you to do so with awareness. The challenges faced by our military and Veteran community are not insurmountable but addressing them requires intention and a commitment to removing barriers to access and other risks that are inherent to Veterans and service members. This ensures resources reach those who need them the most at the local level— in your community.

2) In essence, access for our Veteran and military community transcends physical entry points; it is a dynamic force that unlocks a realm of possibilities. It is a commitment to creating a society where every individual who has served feels empowered, valued, and equipped for success in their civilian endeavors. As we champion access, we sow the seeds for a future where the sacrifices of our community are met with gratitude, support, and boundless opportunities.

3) Together, we can make a difference. Join us in supporting and expanding charitable capacity for our Veteran and military community by contributing to our Funds and advocating in your networks and community. Your involvement can shape a future where access is universal, ensuring a brighter and more inclusive tomorrow for all for those who have served and sacrificed.
